by Severiano Martinez & Zeljko McMullen

Filmed over the course of seven years in collaboration with over 40 artists, We Are Fools is a cinematic exploration of exalted themes of ordinary life – represented by depictions of the Major Arcana of the Tarot. A set of characters were assigned to fit the archetypes of the Tarot, and scenarios were staged to allow each character to improvise and invoke their understanding and autobiographical relationships to the symbols.

The intention of We Are Fools is to explore an unconscious narrative pieced together by carving out a universal story from a series of improvised scenes rather than working from a plan or script. How do we identify with ourselves? What are we trying to accomplish in this life? By blurring the lines of paradox, we sought to depict a series of self-explorative rituals that examine our real-life relationships to enigmatic constructions of reality. Released on Perfect Wave 2014.

The Major Arcana of the Tarot are neither allegories nor secrets, because allegories are only figurative representations of abstract notions, and secrets are only facts, procedures, practices, that one keeps to oneself for a personal motive, since they are able to be understood and put into practice by others to whom one does not want to reveal them.

The Major Arcana of the Tarot are authentic symbols. They conceal and reveal their sense at one and the same time according to the depth of meditation. That which they reveal are not secrets, i.e. things hidden by human will, but are arcana, which is something quite different. An arcanum is that which it is necessary to ‘know’ in order to be fruitful in a given domain of spiritual life.
